This might surprise you to learn, or if you’re as deep into the weeds on these things as we are here maybe it won’t, but Ole Miss has never defeated Missouri as a member of the SEC.
Way back in 1974, the Tigers made the trip to Oxford and came out with a 10-0 loss. That’s the only time the Rebels have beaten the Tigers in the history of college football and this long storied rivalry. I’m kidding here, because it’s just one of 8 results in the history of both schools.
The Tigers beat Ole Miss in back to back games in 1978 and 1979, but then there wasn’t another meeting until the 2006 and 2007 seasons, both of which were won by the Tigers. Both of those sets of years weren’t great seasons for the Rebels, who historically have had a very up and down program.
But Mizzou and Ole Miss have only played twice as conference rivals. That’s the fewest of anyone since the Tigers have entered the SEC. So you could call them passive conference rivals.
The first meeting was in 2013, in Hugh Freeze’s second season. The Rebels were ascending, but not yet full ascended and went 8-5 that year, while the Tigers were 12-2. Then they faced each other again in 2019, during Barry Odom’s last year. Infamously, this is the game after Kelly Bryant injured his knee, and he mostly looked ok throwing the ball. But he wasn’t running the ball as effectively. The Tigers still held off Ole Miss, Matt Luke was fired at the end of the year and they hired Lane Kiffin.
A lot has been made out of the revenge factor from Austin Simmons and Cayden Lee, but I don’t get the impression there’s any animosity between the two sides. Just a lot of respect.
Eli Drinkwitz has never faced Ole Miss as the head coach at Mizzou. Pete Golding has only faced the Tigers as the defensive coordinator at Alabama. So here’s to new things!
