NORMAN — Win and you're in.
That's the message the College Football Playoff committee seemed to send to Oklahoma football in its first rankings released Tuesday. The Sooners were ranked No. 12, which would put OU as the second team out of the playoff if the season ended Tuesday.
The Sooners (7-2, 3-2 SEC) are the third highest-ranked team with two losses, sitting above one-loss teams such as Georgia Tech, Louisville and Virginia.
If OU upsets No. 4 Alabama next Saturday, Nov. 15 (2:30 p.m., ABC) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, followed by wins over No. 22 Missouri and LSU, the Sooners seem poised to make the playoff for the first time since 2019.
If OU loses one of its remaining three games, it's likely eliminated.
If the Sooners win out, they're in. Lose one and they're out.
OU's two losses were to No. 6 Ole Miss and No. 11 Texas, which is good for its resume. However, the Sooners likely need the Longhorns to lose once more. OU's best wins are over No. 21 Michigan and No. 25 Tennessee.
There's a long way to go, but the Sooners are sitting pretty just outside the field in the initial rankings.
All OU has to do is win out.
