The Oklahoma Soonerswere ranked No. 12 by the College Football Playoff committee, as the first rankings were unveiled on Tuesday night. After a big win over Tennessee last week, OU found itself at No. 12 heading into a bye week with three crucial games on the other side of it.

Despite slotting it at twelfth, the Sooners would actually be the second team out of the playoff if the season ended today. That’s because no ACC or Group of Five teams were ranked higher than Oklahoma, and the five highest-ranked conference champions earn automatic bids to the CFP. No. 14 Virginia is the highest-ranked ACC team, bumping No. 11 Texas out of the bracket, and unranked Memphis was the committee’s top G5 team, meaning Oklahoma would be left out as well. Utah, ranked at No. 13, was also left out for two teams ranked lower than them.

The Sooners are currently 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the SEC with three games left. A road game against Alabama comes after this week’s open date, with home games against Missouri and LSU on the docket after that. A 10-2 Oklahoma team would seem to be a lock for the CFP, while a 9-3 OU squad would need a good deal of things to fall its way to get a spot.

Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, BYU, Texas Tech, Oregon and Notre Dame made up the top ten in the rankings. The SEC had nine teams in the Top 25, with Oklahoma ranked sixth-highest from the conference.
