Friendship Christian sophomore defensive end Gideon Knox broke Nashville Christian’s monopoly on the Middle Region major football awards by being named co-Defensive Player of the Year by the league’s coaches, it was released late last week.
Knox led the Commanders with 88 tackles (a statistic which normally goes to the middle linebacker in coordinator Duane Lowe’s defense) and nine sacks. Those sacks were part of 28 tackles for loss. He also led Friendship with three fumble recoveries and intercepted a pass.
He shared the award with linebacker R.J. Perkins of Nashville Christian, which rolled to its second straight Division II-A state championship last week and swept the remaining top honors.
But several Commanders were named first- or second-team all-region, including offensive linemen Kaden Buchanan and Brixton Dorris, quarterback Blake Waldorf, defensive linemen Knox and Gavin McMillan and punter Wilson Boyd.
Boyd also made the second team as the kicker and was joined there by running back Jayden McGowan, linebackers Bruno Prater and Vinny Henry and defensive back Dee Boone.
Mt. Juliet Christian was represented by offensive lineman Thatcher Lanier and defensive back K.K. Curtis on the second team.
