Penn State football will have a new man running the offense in 2026.
Recently hired head coach Matt Campbell has brought along Iowa State offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser to coach the same position at PSU. Mouser is now listed in the university staff directory for the position.
The directory also lists former Iowa State assistants Ryan Clanton as the Nittany Lions‘ new offensive line coach and Deon Broomfield as their defensive secondary coordinator.
Those hires will replace the roles of 2025 Nittany Lion assistants Andy Kotelnicki, Phil Trautwein and Anthony Poindexter. While they all could leave Penn State, Poindexter may be a candidate to replace Jim Knowles at defensive coordinator.
Previously this week, the Lions lost Knowles to Tennessee, tight ends coach Ty Howle and quarterbacks coach Danny O’Brien to Virginia Tech and James Franklin and running backs coach Stan Drayton to South Carolina.
It’s uncertain who will be in place to help interim head coach Terry Smith prepare the Lions to play Clemson in the Dec. 27 Pinstripe Bowl in New York City. The Lions’ bowl game roster also is in flux with standout players beginning to opt-out for the game.
Taylor Mouser, new Penn State football offensive coordinator
Mouser, 34, served as Campbell’s offensive coordinator and assistant head coach the past two years and had worked under him since 2015. Mouser also has worked in scouting, quality control and coaching tight ends.
Iowa State’s offense produced middle-tier results, nationally, last season behind quarterback Rocco Becht, who was slowed by injuries. The Cyclones ranked 51st in rushing offense (174.7 yards per game), 72nd in scoring (27.4 points per game) and 73rd in passing offense (221.4 ypg).
Mouser also tutored standout Iowa State tight end Benhamin Brahmer, who earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2023 and caught 37 passes with six touchdowns last season.
Clanton oversaw a rapidly improving Iowa State rushing attack the past few season as the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator. Cyclones tackle Jalen Travis also was the Cyclones’ first offensive lineman picked in the NFL Draft (2025, fourth round) in more than a decade.
Other Iowa State football personnel following Campbell to Penn State, so far, include: general manager Derek Hoodjer, strength and conditioning coach Reid Kagy and director of player personnel Trent Slattenow.
