Pitt fought through a 65-minute weather delay and a steady downpour throughout the game on Saturday to beat visiting UCF 12-7. True freshman Damon Ferguson Jr. gave the Panthers their only touchdown on a 13-yard run with 28 seconds left in the first half, and the Panthers held UCF scoreless until 2:51 remained. Ferguson picked up 59 yards on 20 carries while Mason Heintschel completed 18 of 29 for 212 yards, with Cataurus Hicks getting 64 yards on three receptions. Braylan Lovelace picked up a safety with a sack in the end zone.
Syracuse bolted out to a 12-0 lead on Saturday before visiting Cal came back for a 21-18 ACC victory on a 24-yard pick-six with 4:51 left in the game. Steve Angeli connected with Daunte Bacheyie to make it a 12-0 game midway through the second quarter before the Golden Bears came back with a pair of touchdowns, taking a 14-12 lead. Ju’Juan Johnson’s two-yard scoring run late in the third restored the Orange’s lead until the late miscue. Angeli finished 24-of-50 for 307 yards and a touchdown but was picked off three times. Tylik Hill ran twice for 56 yards, and Justus Ross-Simmons gained 105 yards with six receptions.
The Panthers hold a 45-33-3 edge in a rivalry that dates to 1916 and has won seven of the last eight meetings, including a 30-13 win at Syracuse on Oct. 18.
