The Penn State football defense has long been known for making life treacherous for opposing quarterbacks.
The Nittany Lions were regularly one of the national leaders in sacks and tackles for loss under coordinators Brent Pry, Manny Diaz and Tom Allen.
So their sudden slip under high-priced coordinator Jim Knowles, with senior star defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton and tackle Zane Durant, has been confounding.

Can that trend possibly shift Saturday in Beaver Stadium against No. 2 Indiana and its lethal offense? It must improve, it would seem, for the Lions to have a shot at breaking their five-game losing streak against Heisman Trophy-candidate quarterback Fernando Mendoza and All-Big Ten receivers Omar Cooper, Jr. and Elijah Sarratt.
Penn State interim head coach Terry Smith said he saw progress in pressuring the quarterback during defeat at Ohio State, despite a lack of statistical evidence.
Dennis-Sutton and Durant have just two sacks each this season and not one in weeks. The Lions rank 93rd nationally, averaging just 1.75 sacks per game. They also are below-standard in tackles for loss (51st nationally).
“Yeah, there is a couple different reasons” for the lack of pass-rush numbers, Smith said. “You know, it’s a completely different defense. This defense is more gap-control. Last year’s defense was more vertical push-up-the-field. It’s just a different philosophy.”
Another reason? “We don’t have Abdul Carter … That’s a major factor,” Smith said of the former PSU edge rusher and first-round NFL Draft pick.
Penn State football schedule: Nittany Lions’ next game
Penn State, on a five-game losing streak, will play as an underdog, once again, against the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten). Saturday’s game will begin at noon in Beaver Stadium and will be televised by FOX and streamed on Fubo (with a free trial).

Penn State vs. Indiana prediction
Look for more competent-appearing effort with two of the Lions’ greatest weaknesses: throwing the ball downfield and rushing the opposing quarterback.
That will help the Lions make a charge early and possibly late. The problem is doing enough to derail arguably the hottest, most confident team in the nation.
The numbers will look better at the end. So will quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer and a couple of his forlorn receivers. It just won’t be quite enough to pull through.
The losing streak builds for one more week.
Prediction: Indiana 31, Penn State 20
