One of the current faces of Penn State football is officially done as senior running back Nick Singleton will opt out of the Pinstripe Bowl. The news was first reported by the Reading Eagle’s Rich Scarcella.
Singleton, who was already going to the NFL Draft after maxing out his college eligibility, recorded 768 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns in 12 games. His role as a running back was reduced this year with Kaytron Allen receiving more carries, but the Pennsylvania native still did enough to break the record for career rushing touchdowns and all-purpose touchdowns.
There was a chance that players would opt out of the bowl game: Zane Durant and Zakee Wheatley both announced they wouldn’t participate in the Pinstripe Bowl and instead focus on the draft as well. Still, Singleton is the highest-profile name to date of the opt-outs.
It’s another change in a long list of offseason moves for Penn State football, which includes hiring a new head coach in Matt Campbell (and more recently his offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser) from Iowa State, and Elliot Washington being the first of a projected several players to share their intentions to enter the transfer portal.
The Nittany Lions will play Clemson inside Yankee Stadium and will be led by Terry Smith, who’s interim head coaching tenure comes to an end a few days before the New Year. But Smith will still be around as he agreed to an extension with Penn State to remain on the staff with Campbell.
