The Heisman Trophy honors college football’s top player each season. Four college football stars will compete for the sport’s most prestigious honor, the Heisman Trophy, when the winner is announced Saturday, Dec. 13, in New York.

This year’s Heisman Trophy could give Ohio State its eighth win as quarterback Julian Sayin is one of four finalists for the 91st annual Heisman Memorial Trophy.

Finalists for the 2025 Heisman Trophy include:

Sayin and Mendoza give the Big Ten another year of multiple Heisman Trophy finalists.

Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon QB Bo Nix were both finalists in 2023. A year earlier, USC’s Caleb Williams (the Heisman winner) and OSU’s C.J. Stroud were both finalists. And in 2021, Stroud and Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson were both up for the award.

Who won the Heisman Trophy in 2024? 

Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter was the winner of the Heisman Trophy in 2024. Hunter was the first Heisman winner and finalist from Colorado since Rashaan Salaam won in 1994, according to the Heisman Trust.

How many times has Ohio State won the Heisman Trophy?

Ohio State has produced six previous Heisman Trophy winners, for a total of seven individual wins thanks to running back Archie Griffin’s back-to-back awards in 1974 and 1975. Only USC has more Heisman winners with eight, but Ohio State, Oklahoma and Notre Dame are each tied with seven, The Columbus Dispatch reports.

The most recent winner from Ohio State was Quarterback Troy Smith in 2006. Running back Eddie George, the current head coach at Bowling Green, won 11 years earlier in 1995.
