Illinois Defensive Coordinator Bobby Hauck Departs from Fighting Illini

The Bobby Hauck era in Champaign is coming to an end after just four games.
Illinois Fighting Illini head coach Bret Bielema announced via press release on Sunday that Hauck and the program had mutually agreed to part ways.
"Coach Hauck reached out to me early this morning and asked to meet ahead of our planned meeting time," Bielema said. "We met and mutually agreed that a change in leadership was in the best interests of our defense. Coach Hauck and I agreed this is the best path forward for our staff, and most importantly, our student-athletes, at this time. I would like to thank Bobby for his work with our program."
Bielema declined to name Hauck's replacement, saying that Illinois was communicating its plan to its staff and players internally.
Through four games, Illinois has the third-worst scoring defense and total yardage defense in the Big Ten. The Illini also ranked 101st in the FBS in scoring defense and 111th in total defense, out of 138 teams nationally.
Hauck, 62, joined Illinois after spending the prior eight seasons at Montana. He was the head coach of the Grizzlies from 2003 to 2009 and 2018 to 2026, compiling a 151-43 record at the FCS level.
The longtime Montana coach brought his 3-3-5 defensive scheme to the Fighting Illini, but the results were worse than Bielema and Illinois had hoped.
Illinois gave up 23 points to UAB in its opener, then 31 to Duke in Week 2. The defense had a bounce-back performance against FCS opponent Southern Illinois before surrendering 42 points to No. 7 Ohio State on Saturday.
The biggest issue with Hauck's unit was the run defense. In three games against FBS competition, the Fighting Illini allowed 515 rushing yards — an average of 171.7 per game.
Bielema will likely assume defensive play-calling duties, although there are several potential options if he chooses to elevate a position coach. Outside linebackers coach Archie McDaniel and defensive backs coach Corey Parker — coaching their third season at Illinois — are the two longest tenured defensive position coaches in Champaign. Secondary coach Ronnie Bradford, inside linebackers coach Roger Cooper, defensive ends coach Mike Linehan and defensive line coach/run game coordinator Jordan Thomas all joined the Fighting Illini in 2026.
Illinois is now 2-2 on the season, including 0-1 in Big Ten play after falling to the Buckeyes. The Fighting Illini catch a bit of a break over the next two weeks in Purdue and Michigan State, but following their bye, the schedule projects to be much tougher down the stretch.
In Illinois' final six regular season games, Bielema's team will face No. 15 Oregon, Maryland, Nebraska, No. 23 UCLA, No. 14 Iowa and Northwestern.
The Fighting Illini are scheduled to host the Boilermakers on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 3:15 p.m. CT.
