There was good news for the Arizona State football team. Then there was more good news.
Just as the Sun Devils were wrapping up practice on Dec. 13, the school received a commitment for 2027 quarterback Weston Nielsen, out of Bastrop High School, 30 miles southeast of Austin, Texas. Nielsen, a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, announced his decision on a YouTube channel.
Nielsen is a four-star recruit according to all the services. He had 18 offers, with eight of those Big 12 schools. Among the others were Vanderbilt, Miami, Oregon and Illinois.
As a junior, Nielsen threw for 3,130 yards, 47 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, without counting the Randle contest, in which he left with an injury.
Head coach Kenny Dillingham has one quarterback in the recently signed 2026 class in Jake Fette, from El Paso. The Sun Devils are reloading at the position after the impending transfer of incumbent starter Sam Leavitt.
Nielsen is the second commitment of the 2027 cycle. The first was from wide receiver Nico Bland of Orange Lutheran (California).
Nielsen's commitment came shortly after Dillingham addressed the media and confirmed he was in talks with the school about a contract extension, squashing rumors he was entertaining a thought of pursuing the vacant Michigan head coaching position.
