Iowa State Gets Bad News on Former No. 102 Recruit After Coaching Change

Iowa State defensive lineman Markell Chapman, who previously left the team in October, reaffirmed that he plans to enter the transfer portal.

Jeff Jaykwon, Chapman’s representative, confirmed the decision to 247Sports on Saturday. Chapman, who joined Iowa State as a junior college transfer last winter, did not record any statistics with the Cyclones.

Chapman’s decision comes shortly after Iowa State hired Washington State coach Jimmy Rogers to replace Matt Campbell, who took the Penn State job on Dec. 8.

247Sports considered the 6-foot-3, 305-pound Chapman to be the nation’s No. 102 junior college prospect last winter. The outlet ranked Chapman a three-star prospect and the No. 21 JUCO defensive lineman.

Chapman recorded 14 tackles (seven for a loss), three sacks, and forced a fumble at Highland Community College (Kan.) during the 2024 season. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

What to Know About Jimmy Rogers and Iowa State Football

Rogers inherits an Iowa State team that has remained among the Big 12’s more consistent programs, recording winning seasons in nine of the past ten years. The Cyclones went 8-4 (5-4 in the Big 12) this year, the fifth time in Campbell’s 10 seasons that they won at least eight games.

After a 5-0 start, injuries and an inconsistent offense doomed Iowa State during a four-game losing streak. However, the Cyclones rattled off three straight victories to end the season, including road wins over TCU and Oklahoma State. Iowa State opted not to play in a bowl game.

Rogers, who turns 39 in March, is one of the nation’s fastest-rising coaches. He led South Dakota State to an undefeated season and FCS championship in 2023, his first year as a head coach, and followed that up with a 12-3 (7-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference) finish in 2024. The Jackrabbits reached the FCS semifinals but lost, 28-21, to North Dakota State.

Washington State went 6-6 under Rogers in the school’s second season as an FBS independent. The Cougars had previously spent over 40 years in the Pac-12 (which was also the Pac-8 and Pac-10) before the league dissolved in the most recent round of conference realignment.

Despite the .500 finish, Washington State outscored opponents 259-242 and will face Utah State (6-6) in the Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 22. However, Rogers will not coach in that game, with interim coach Jesse Bobbit instead handling that role.
