Georgia football specialist earns national award

Georgia Bulldogs punter Brett Thorson has earned the Ray Guy award, which is awarded annually to college football’s top punter. Thorson, a senior, won the award after completing a remarkable recovery from a knee injury that he suffered in the 2024 SEC championship. He missed Georgia‘s Week 1 win over Marshall, but played in all of the Bulldogs’ remaining games.

Thorson averaged 45.2 yards per punt for Georgia in 2025. He had a season long punt of 66 yards and had half of his 42 punts downed inside the 20.

Thorson won the award over Troy punter Evan Crenshaw and Baylor punter Palmer Williams. Both Crenshaw and Williams averaged more yards per punt than Thorson, but neither player pinned their opponents inside the 20 half of the time like Thorson.

Despite Thorson winning the Ray Guy award, he was not named as a first-team All-SEC selection. Oklahoma’s Grayson Miller earned first-team All-SEC honors, but was not a Ray Guy finalist.
