Florida football quarterback DJ Lagway announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on Monday, Dec. 15.
Lagway’s decision comes after a tumultuous year in which, heading into the 2025 season, he did not have a full offseason due to various injuries and did not become a full participant in practice until the final week of fall camp.
In his first full season as starting quarterback, the sophomore threw for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns and an SEC-leading 14 interceptions while completing 63% of his passes. He also ran for 118 yards and a touchdown.
“Dear Gator family, first and foremost, I want to thank God for every blessing he has placed over my life. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an incredible program here at the University of Florida,” Lagway’s social media post read.
“To my coaches, athletic training staff, and every member for the University of Florida community – thank you for pouring into me, throughout my time in Gainesville. After much prayer, reflection, and thoughtful consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”

Lagway became the Gators’ starter midway through the 2024 season following an injury to Graham Mertz. In seven starts, he threw for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions and led UF to four straight wins to end the season.
Out of high school, Lagway was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2024.
While the transfer portal doesn’t officially open until Jan. 2, many players around the country have opted to get a head start and announce their intentions to transfer — Lagway serving as a recent example.
