Longtime assistant Kenny Cobble has been named the next coach of Maryville football, the school told Knox News.
“Maryville High School continues its tradition of excellence by naming Kenny Cobble as the new Head Football Coach for the Maryville Rebels,” the school said in a press release. “Coach Cobble brings extensive coaching experience and a long-standing commitment to developing student athletes on and off the field. Coach Cobble has served on the Maryville football coaching staff as defensive coordinator, including working with the linebackers and other defensive units.”
Cobble, who becomes the program’s 19th coach, steps in after Derek Hunt’s resignation on Dec. 15. Hunt, who led the Rebels for nine seasons, guided Maryville to two TSSAA Class 6A state championships in 2017 and 2019, and captured eight region titles.
“I am so humbled to have the opportunity to serve our unbelievable players, coaches and community; they are second to none,” Cobble said in the statement. “There is truly no place like Maryville.”
Cobble was an assistant coach at Maryville since he joined George Quarles’ staff in 2016. Previously, he was the head coach at Jefferson County from 2011-2015. The Patriots had a 24-29 record and three playoff appearances under Cobble.
Maryville football has had an eventful week, dating back to Quarles’ hiring as Webb’s coach on Dec. 9. Quarles propelled the school into one of the elite football programs in the country. The Rebels went 250-16 and won 11 state championships across 18 seasons with Quarles in charge.
When Quarles left for college football at Furman, Maryville promoted Hunt, a young, 27-year-old assistant at the time.
