Kenny Dillingham Michigan speculation returns after ASU coach comments

Is Arizona State football coach Kenny Dillingham still a candidate for the Michigan coaching job?

On Dec. 13, the football coach got emotional when talking about Arizona State, comments that many thought indicated the coach staying with the Sun Devils was basically a done deal.

A contract extension to lock Dillingham up at Arizona State was also reported to be in the works, but no information about an agreement or signing has been announced.

That has led to a return in speculation linking Dillingham to Michigan.

The Associated Press added fuel to the fire of speculation with a recent report that Michigan has contacted representatives for Dillingham, leading to a renewal in rumors linking the ASU coach to the Wolverines.

Arizona State insider addresses Kenny Dillingham to Michigan possibility

Sun Devil Source's Chris Karpman addressed the situation on Dec. 16, saying that Michigan remains interested in Dillingham.

“I can’t say whether there has been any dialogue directly between Dillingham and Michigan at this point,” Karpman said on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “But I wouldn’t be surprised if that ultimately ended up happening if (Arizona State and Dillingham) can’t come to an agreement on a new amended contract here within the next several days or something."

He added that Dillingham is a coach in demand.

“I think that he’s just a very emotional person as it relates to ASU,” Karpman told the Bickley and Marotta Show. “This is a coach who, for sure, could have aggressively courted and been given opportunities to coach in the SEC or the Big Ten already. And he could have made several million dollars a year more at those jobs — maybe $4 million, $5 million at the high end — more than he’s making at ASU.

“I don’t think this is about money … but I also think that he wants to feel like the university is as committed to him as he is loyal to the university. (If) he felt like that were the case, I don’t think he is going to end up leaving.”

What Kenny Dillingham recently said about Arizona State

Arizona State fans probably didn't imagine being in this situation based on Dillingham's comments to reporters last week.

"I love this place, I mean," Dillingham said on Dec. 13, before a full 30 seconds of silence as he gathered his emotions and thoughts. "Was that a long enough pause?

"This place is just — it's a special place to me."

He added, talking about the reported Michigan interest: "I think that's cool, I guess. I mean that's one of the best programs in the country, one of the best logos in the country, I think everybody can agree there, It's one of the best jobs in the country, and I think everybody can attest to that.

"That doesn't change how I feel about here. That doesn't change that my sister is my next-door neighbor. That doesn't change that my parents live three doors down. That doesn't change that my son's best friend is my sister's daughter. So none of that changes. It is one of the best jobs in the country because of the brand. It's going to be a good opportunity for somebody."

Dillingham also said: "It's a testament to what the president's done (Michael Crow), what the A.D.'s done (Graham Rossini). The city's selling out. The kids who chose to come back here when they could have gone other places.

"I know where I stand. I know what I want, and as a leader of a group, it's my job to take care of groups of people and to do right by groups of people. Not just Kenny Dillingham."

Some ASU fans' anxiety likely grew on Dec. 16, when Dillingham told reporters that his job wasn't to ease the stress of the fanbase, it was to fight for those in his "foxhole."

Arizona State fans anxious for Sun Devils to secure Kenny Dillingham

In the interview on Arizona Sports, Karpman said that Dillingham appears to be trying to improve his situation at Arizona State as much as possible, and that of those around him.

“My sense is that he doesn’t have a general manager. He doesn’t have the same amount of staffing (or) resources or compensation pool for his staff that other places have,” Karpman said. “… Reading the tea leaves here more than from a reporting standpoint … he wants more resources that will allow him to feel good about the situation in two years from now.”

The situation has many Arizona State fans growing uneasy, with thoughts of potentially losing Dillingham to Michigan, a program with immense resources, returning just a few days after the situation appeared to be settled.
