Former Alabama star quarterback named head coach of UFL team

Per an announcement by the team Thursday morning, former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback AJ McCarron has been named the new head coach of the UFL's Birmingham Stallions.

The first head coaching position in his career, McCarron replaces former Stallions coach Skip Holtz, who previously held the role since 2022.

One of the most accomplished players in Alabama football history, McCarron spent four seasons in Tuscaloosa from 2010-13, the final three of which were as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback. McCarron finished his Alabama career with a combined 9,019 passing yards and 77 career touchdown passes across those four seasons, and led the Crimson Tide to two national championships in 2011 and 2012.

The former Alabama quarterback also won multiple awards during his time in Tuscaloosa such as the 2013 Maxwell Award, and also finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy that same season.

A fifth round pick in 2014 by the Cincinnati Bengals, McCarron also spent seven seasons in the NFL primarily as a backup quarterback, appearing in 19 games from 2015-23. McCarron also started four of those games, and saw time in games with the Bengals, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Texans during his career.

The former Alabama quarterback last played back in 2024 as a member of the UFL's St. Louis Battlehawks.

McCarron now takes over a Birmingham Stallions team that has been an accomplished one in recent years. The Stallions also currently have two former Alabama players on the roster in offensive lineman Deonte Brown and defensive back Shyheim Carter.
