Michigan football coach Kyle Whittingham addressed the media on Sunday, answering questions about the Ohio State Buckeyes, potential assistant coaching hires, and the hottest topic in college football, the transfer portal, just days before Michigan’s bowl game matchup against Texas.

Whittingham joined the Wolverines in Orlando with plenty to discuss heading toward the 2026 calendar year, which will be his first in Ann Arbor.

The former Utah Utes head coach made a firm statement on his transfer portal philosophy that led to controversy as fans began reacting with strong statements of their own.

Whittingham Makes Portal Statement

Whittingham said that “tampering” with players on other teams is not his cup of tea in response to a question about current Utes players.

Whittingham coached Utah to an undefeated season and bowl win over the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2008-2009 and won two straight Pac-12 titles in 2021 and 2022.

“You don’t tamper with anybody, that’s not my style,” Whittingham said.

“If a player we have interest in enters the portal, that’s a whole different ballgame.

“Now he’s in the portal, he’s going somewhere, — so why not Michigan, if it’s a good fit?” Whittingham added.

Fans React to New Coach’s Portal Stance

Fans reacted to Whittingham’s portal stance in the comments.

“He’s already reached out to half of BYU’s and Utah’s two-deep players,” one said in an embellished fashion.

Another called Whittingham’s bluff on the topic.

“Like the players aren’t hearing him say that,” another said, offering guesswork in response to Whittingham’s message.

“He said that on purpose telling them to enter the portal.”

“Sooo he’s telling them to enter the portal without directly telling them, that’s smart coach!” another said, hinting they believe Whittingham wants to sign some of his former players.

“He’s totally going to tamper,” another said.

“He’s going to be too clean for Michigan’s liking,” another said. “From one extreme to the other.”

“That’s why you let the agents do the work,” another said.

“Smart philosophy.”

“The system is built on tampering,” another said. “Agents, GMs, backchannels, donors…By the time it gets to the coach it’s already done.”

“Oh come on, you know he’s talked to Devon Dampier!” another said of the Utes’ junior quarterback.

Whittingham’s comments were controversial in nature, as was to be expected from a coach succeeding another previously involved in a high profile scandal.

The Wolverines have a long way to go toward earning back fans’ trust, and it starts this weekend with Whittingham in Florida and Biff Poggi preparing to lead Michigan into gridiron battle against Texas in three short days.
