Jeremiah Smith is the best college wide receiver in the country.

The Ohio State Buckeyes star could've easily played for the Miami Hurricanes. That's a great subplot heading into Wednesday's Cotton Bowl matchup in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Smith is from Miami.

That means that this week, Smith was asked about his hometown institution. Would he have played there instead of OSU?

Smith was honest, according to On3's Ari Wasserman:

"I probably would've ended up going to Miami if things were on the right track then and there, but I chose to stick with Ohio State."

Miami has only found its true footing in the last year or two.

The Hurricanes have maximized their passing game with transfer QBs Cam Ward and Carson Beck.

If they had Smith, they'd surely be even more formidable. And it'd be a very different-look Ohio State.

But as it is, Smith plays for the Buckeyes. And he's joined by fellow superstar WR Carnell Tate in the best passing game duo around.

Miami won't take any solace from the fact that Smith would've gone there in an alternate universe. The Hurricanes live in this universe, and that means they'll have to find some way to slow him down this week, or their season will be over.
