Fernando Mendoza has taken the college football world by storm. He's become the first Heisman winner in Indiana school history and helped the Hoosiers earn the No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff.
Indiana will take on No. 9 Alabama in the Rose Bowl in the quarterfinal round. But what you may not know is that Fernando has a younger brother, Alberto. His brother is currently Indiana's backup quarterback.

Who is Alberto Mendoza?
Alberto Mendoza is Fernando Mendoza's younger brother. In fact, Alberto arrived at Indiana before his older brother, signing with the Hoosiers in Dec. 2023 and enrolling in the summer of 2024. Fernando spent the 2024 season with the Cal Bears.
How old is Alberto Mendoza?
Alberto is a redshirt freshman at Indiana, taking a redshirt during his 2024 true freshman season. Although his exact birth date is not known, he is somewhere between 18 and 19 years old.

Is Alberto Mendoza as good as Fernando Mendoza?
Just how good Alberto is isn't quite known just yet, since he hasn't been a full-time starter in college just yet. In 2024, he took a redshirt while backing up quarterbacks Kurtis Rourke, Tayven Jackson and Tyler Cherry.
Over his two seasons, he has appeared in eight games, making 25 completions for 292 yards with five touchdowns. He briefly appeared in the Big Ten title game for a play after Fernando took a big hit, but he came out after one play.

Alberto Mendoza recruiting
Mendoza was rated as a 3-star quarterback recruit per the 247Sports Composite. He was ranked as the No. 84 overall quarterback from the class of 2024, and ranked as the 204th recruit out of his home state of Florida.
Like his older brother Fernando, Alberto played high school football at Columbus High School in Miami under head coach Dave Dunn. Mendoza received offers from James Madison, App State, East Carolina and several other non-power schools. Indiana and Duke were his only power-conference school offers.
Indiana offered Alberto in Dec. 2023, and he took a visit to Bloomington and committed shortly thereafter. He was previously committed to JMU from June 2023 to December, before the Indiana offer came along.

According to MaxPreps, Mendoza threw for 4,741 yards with 58 touchdowns and 13 interceptions over three seasons at Columbus. Hr added 743 yards with two touchdowns on the ground.
