Bowl Predictions: Huskers vs. Utes

Mike: It’s the most wonderful time of the year….

Patrick: Woohoo, midweek football!

Jon: I will be interested to see what the viewership numbers are for these games. People keep complaining that college football is dying and that the changes recently have killed it. And I am guessing what we’re going to see is more people watch these games than they ever have before.

Nate M: I am also reminded that we wait all year for football and then we only get 12+ games a year. Try and enjoy them!

Andy: I read where the actual numbers say the bowls are fine. Piss on angry ole white folks – you guys are the one’s dying, college football is fine and paying players is only just. Embrace the madness!!

Jill: I’ve watched fewer bowl games than ever. But, not because I’m objecting to payers getting payed or anything like that. I just have grumpy, anti-sports males in my life. Sigh.

Cotton Bowl

Ohio State (-6) vs. Miami

Patrick: the Ohio State University 28 University of Miami 10

Mike: The U is gonna need more than ten points in this one. A lot more. Bucknuts 37, Tropical Depresssion 13

Jon: Miami has an incredible defense, and it’s clear that’s why they’re in this game. Mike hit on the problem they have and that their offense isn’t that prolific. I think Ohio State will end up in the national title game because they just have so many players. Ohio State 35, Miami 17

Nate M: I’m not a believer in Sayin. I would enjoy seeing Miami pulling the upset but that will affect my Big Ten is The Greatest Conference In The History of Western Civilization argument.

Ohio State by 20.

Andy: Ohio State’s defense is elite, but their offense isn’t. In addition, Carson Beck is Carson Beck. This game is not going over 40.5. Buckeyes 24 Miami 14

Jill: I don’t see the Hurricanes hanging in this one very long and they are going to be eager to make a statement. Buckeyes 34 Miami 19

Orange Bowl

Oregon (-2.5) vs. Texas Tech

Patrick: University of Oregon 21 Texas Tech University 17

Mike: This one is perhaps the most intriguing CFP quarterfinal game of them all. Ducks 31, Raiders 28

Jon: It’s hard to believe that Texas Tech could beat Oregon. Two of the most explosive offenses in the nation. Two of the better defenses in the nation. It’s going to be a score fest. I don’t know what the over is, but it’s got to be around 384. I’m going to pick against Dante Moore. Texas Tech 45, Oregon 42

Nate M: Will be pulling for Oregon in this game but I’m not sure they win it. Texas Tech is building a juggernaut with that oil money. Texas Tech wins.

Unfortunately this hurts my The Big Ten Conference Is The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread argument.

Andy: These two both have solid enough defenses that I don’t see a 40’s – 40’s shootout. Texas Tech is not short on talent anymore, but I don’t know that they’ve faced a team as loaded as Oregon. I say the Ducks jump out to an early lead & the Tech rally falls short. Oregon 31 TT 28

Jill: Tech is buying their way to the top but I think Oregon’s head start in that department saves them, for this go-round at least. Ducks 28 Red Raiders 24

Rose Bowel

Indiana (-7) vs. Alabama

Patrick: Indiana University 31 University of Alabama 23

Mike: The Hoosiers have had nearly a month, gorging on all of the accolades for their #1 ranked team. But here comes ‘Bama. Tide 38, Hoosiers 30

Jon: If you haven’t heard of Curt Cignetti, you can Google him. All he does is win. I was surprised that Alabama made it past Texas A&M. I don’t think they’ll make it past Indiana. Indiana just finds ways, and I love their quarterback, Mendoza. And honestly, I hope that Indiana wins the national title. That will wreck college football because of how quickly they’ve turned things around, but Indiana throughout their entire history have never done much. Maybe it’s karma from the gods that they’re here and that they can win this game. Indiana 38, Alabama 28

Nate M: Seven points is a lot. I think they will win but it might be much closer than we are expecting. Thus my The Big Ten Conference Is The Bees Knees argument will be sustained.

Andy: The #1 team in the country is about to shock a lot of people who can’t see beyond jerseys and logos. Hoosiers 27 Bama 10

Jill: Indiana winning a natty would be awesome. I could even convince my grumpy husband to watch that game! Hoosiers 39 Tide 29

Sugar Bowl

Georgia (-6.5) vs. Ole Miss

Patrick: University of Georgia 35 University of Mississippi 23

Mike: This might end up being a track meet…but the Lane-less Rebels won’t have enough in their tank. Dawgs 42, Rebs 31

Jon: I’m going against the grain on this one. Ole Miss still has stuff left in the tank.Georgia isn’t that undefeatable. Ole Miss 38, Georgia 31.

Nate M: Who isn’t pulling for Ole Miss? I would love to see them to make a run. Screw it. Ole Miss by 3. This is another EMBARASSING loss for the SEC. This will help my The SEC Conference Is Worse Than The Big East argument.

Andy: I’m biased, but this is a different Georgia team than the one who gave up touchdowns on the first five drives and still dominated Mississippi physically late for the 43-35 win in their first meeting. Their last two SEC match-ups involved Alabama & Texas being beaten by a combined 46 points. The Rebels gonna miss their hot yoga coach in this one. Georgia 37 Ole Miss 24

Jill: Dawgs 34 Rebs 27

Las Vegas Bowl

Utah (-14) vs. Nebraska

Patrick: University of Utah 34 University of Nebraska 28

Mike: Not sure how NU slows down the Utes in this one, but I am cautiously optimistic that TJ Lateef can get some points in this one. Utes 37, Huskers 28

Jon: The spread is 14. That’s quite a spread. It’s understandable given Emmett Johnson is not playing. Dylan Raiola is not playing. I don’t have a complete line on who’s not playing for Nebraska. You also have players sitting out for Utah. Suffice it to say that nobody knows what’s going to happen in this game, and bowl games are a lot about whether or not you want to be there. It’s a tremendous opportunity for some of our new coaches to see their players in action. That’s what this game should be about. Utah 31, Nebraska 30

Nate M: Can Nebraska stop the run? Because until I see it, I won’t believe it. This is true even if Matt Rhule is coaching the defensive line. I think Utah wins by 20.

Andy: Well, somebody’s gotta do it. Bowl season’s missing that inexplicable upset and Nebraska’s due for a big win against a ranked team. No logic is going into this. Nebraska pulls it out on the strength of two returns, one by kickoff, one by punt as well as a Utah punt return fumble and a missed 35-yd FG attempt to win it at the gun. Mike Ekeler MVP. Huskers 27 Utes 25

Jill: This one is going to be ugly from the start. Utes 36 Huskers 18
