Indiana hands Alabama its largest loss in postseason history

No. 1-seed Indiana football’s 38-3 win over No. 9-seed Alabama in the Rose Bowl Game on Thursday afternoon was historic for a few reasons.

For Indiana, it’s the Hoosiers’ first Rose Bowl win and the program’s first bowl win overall since 1991. For Alabama, it’s the largest postseason loss by margin in program history. Nobody had ever beaten the Crimson Tide by 35 points until the Hoosiers did it.

Alabama’s other lopsided postseason losses include the 44-16 loss to Clemson in the 2019 National Championship, a 38-6 loss to Nebraska in the 1972 Orange Bowl, and a 38-7 loss to Virginia Tech in the 1998 Music City Bowl.

Alabama claims 18 national championships, with six since 2000 all coming under former head coach Nick Saban. Given how prevalent the “we want Bama” chant used to be around college football, it says something to actually get Bama and hand it a a 35-point loss.
