The first weekend of the open market has proven fruitful for the Arizona State football program, which has already received commitments from four recruits from the transfer portal.

The third and fourth of those came on Jan. 4 as Villanova running back David Avit and Texas cornerback Caleb Chester announced their intentions to transfer to ASU.

Those two pledges follow on the heels of quarterback Cutter Boley and wide receiver Raiden Vines-Bright. Boley committed on his visit a day earlier, while Vines-Bright's was earlier on Jan. 4.

Both fit the positions of need. ASU lost both its starting cornerbacks, Keith Abney to the draft and Javan Robinson to the transfer portal. Abney's backup, Nyland Green, is also graduating.

ASU has running backs returning, but the workhorse of the group, Raleek Brown, declared for the draft, only to reverse course and enter the transfer portal.

Avit (6-0, 225 lbs) has rushed for 1,610 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons. He rushed for more than 100 yards three times the past season, the high being 135 yards. As a true freshman in 2024, he set a Villanova freshman record last year for rushing yards in a season with 923, which helped earn him Coastal Athletic Association Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

In 2025, he was named to the CAA preseason All-Conference team.

Chester (6-1, 179 lbs) is yet another of the ASU recruits who hail from Texas. He played in only one game in 2025 and redshirted, so he still has four full years of eligibility. He was a three-star prospect in the 2025 recruiting cycle, in which he committed to his first school. Among his other offers were Texas A&M, LSU, and Oregon.
