The Woodbridge football team put up a “Help Wanted” sign for a quarterback in the offseason after two-year star Derek Anderson graduated.
Enter sophomore Dylan Stephen emerging to run the triple option. He’s steadily improved in a tricky offense where the signal caller needs to make lightning-quick decisions.
He deftly helped orchestrate Woodbridge’s 21-7 win over Rahway in the North 2 Group 4 quarterfinals after the Barrons trailed at halftime.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pounder scored on a pair of 1-yard runs and picked up a 2-yard gain on a fourth-and-one from Woodbridge’s own 36 on the first possession of the second half. He finished with 15 rushing yards for 58 yards.
Woodbridge fans rewarded Stephen’s efforts by voting him the MyCentralJersey.com’s Big Central Conference Readers’ Choice Football Player of the Week. He garnered over 13,000 votes or 52 percent of the total cast.
“He’s only a sophomore but he’s a big team leader,” teammate Justin Blake said. “He always keeps us encouraged.”
Stephen has been able to grow into the position as senior Josh Allen has rushed for 1,464 yards and 19 touchdowns. He’s smoothly got the ball to Allen and stepped up when called upon. He chipped in 307 rushing yards on 74 carries with seven touchdowns for the season and has thrown for 317 yards and four scores with one interception.
Not a bad rookie season at all.
Woodbridge coach Joe Goerge praised Stephen for being the leader in the huddle and “the operator of the offense” in last Friday’s win.
“Dylan loves to play football,” Goerge said. “He is a student of the game and works to get better each day. His growth this year after 10 games has been very obvious. He understands our system, what we want to do in our offense and not to try and do too much.”
