While Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes staff are busy with the transfer portal, high school recruiting has not been forgotten.

On Sunday, class of 2026 quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne committed to the Buffs. The three-star recruit took a visit to Boulder over the weekend and came away impressed enough to commit. CU beat out NC State, BYU and Utah State for the signal caller. Sweetwyne had initially signed with NC State but was released from his letter of intent.

The dual-threat quarterback seems like the ideal fit for new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion’s Go-Go offense. The Lehi, Utah native is ranked as the No. 75 quarterback in the class of 2026 and the No. 21 recruit from Utah.

At Skyridge High School in 2024, Sweetwyne completed 62 percent of his pass attempts for 2,675 yards and 19 touchdowns, but threw 16 interceptions. He rushed for 930 yards and 10 touchdowns, leading his team to the Utah 5A state semifinals.

With redshirt freshman Julian Lewis going nowhere soon, it is impressive that Sanders and the Buffs landed a freshman quarterback in the 2026 class. He will likely be CU’s third or fourth-string signal caller in 2026 behind Lewis and new transfer addition Isaac Wilson.
