Penn State will face a variety of head coaches this season, some that they are familiar with and some they may never have faced before or even heard of. To start the 2026 football season, they will be playing against a head coach they have never played against and who is going into his second season coaching the Thundering Herd. Here is more about Marshall head coach Tony Gibson.

Tony Gibson, Marshall Head Coach

  • Overall record: 5-7
  • Record against Penn State: N/A
  • Record against ranked teams: 0-2
  • Record against Big Ten: N/A

There is not much history behind Gibson's tenure at Marshall, as last year was his first with the program. He replaced Charles Huff, who had spent four seasons with the program, but only went 32-30. Gibson actually was hired mere minutes after Huff's departure. However, to earn that role, he had to grind out a career that saw him become one of college football's most underrated defensive minds.

He actually played defensive back at Glenville State in West Virginia, winning two WVIAC championships with the program. He became more famous when he joined Rick Rodriguez's staff in West Virginia as a DBs coach and learned all about the 3-3-5 defense. In his time with the Mountaineers, he perfected a more aggressive style of the system that relied on unpredictability and versatility. After finally being named defensive coordinator of the program, he implemented that new-look system to combat Big 12 offenses. During that time, he mentored West Virginia greats like LB David Long, who was a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2018.

Gibson later moved to NC State in 2019, where he earned even greater recognition. In fact, he won the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in 2021 for the Wolfpack, after they ranked second in scoring defense in the ACC. He ended up coaching both a Bednarik and a Butkus Award winner in both Isaiah Moore and Payton Wilson.

Now, headed into his second season with Marshall, Tony Gibson could look to shock Penn State and earn his first ranked win as a head coach.
