A win for the history books, Teurlings Catholic football snaps 10-year losing streak vs STM

For the past 10 years, St. Thomas More football has been kryptonite for Teurlings Catholic handing them loss after loss in their yearly district matchup.

The Rebels senior dual-threat quarterback Alex Munoz wasn’t going to let this year’s meeting end the same. With Munoz, and an unrelenting defense, Teurlings slayed the giant for a 38-14 win that the Rebels community won’t forget about.

“As a player, I was 0-4 against these guys and it’s been 10 years in a row — so it’s a great win and that’s why you do it,” Teurlings football coach Michael Courville said. “For our program I think it’s a great step to where we want to be. I’m just super excited and happy for these kids they’ve worked their butts off.”

This win not only broke the decade-long winning streak the Cougars held over the Rebels, but it was also one step closer to a perfect 10-0 record in the regular season.

Down 14-3 in the first half, the Rebels could feel the game slipping into STM’s favor. That’s when Munoz stepped up.

“It just took settling it,” Munoz said. “We were getting stopped by our own mistakes, we had a good game plan and we were doing great. We just had to settle in and make some adjustments and it worked out great.”

The Teurlings offense proved to be dangerous as Munoz rushed for a 6-yard touchdown to make it 14-10. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound athlete was ripping and running through any STM defender that stood in his path. He ended the game by leading the Rebels ground game with around 170 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

In the air, Munoz also found the endzone by connecting with wide receiver Quinn Simon for 12-yard touchdown that allowed Teurlings to take a lead it never relinquished.

“Unbelievable,” Courville said of Munoz’s performance against STM. “I mean leadership, his toughness, his grit, his knowledge of the game, I mean I can’t say enough about Alex. I couldn’t have a better quarterback for my first year. We just have a great relationship and I’m super proud of him.”

Courville and his staff were also proud of the Rebels defense, who held the Cougars’ usally potent offense scoreless in the second half. Linebacker Carter Macha, who was flying to the ball every chance he got, led the charge.

STM’s turnover problem

Momentum settled in on STM’s sideline in the first half with its three-star quarterback Cole Bergeron running the show. The 6-foot-2 Virginia Tech commit rushed for a 6-yard touchdown and connected with wide receiver Blake Caillet for a 50-yard touchdown pass.

That success couldn’t be repeated in the second half as the Rebels defense became stingy on the ground, forcing the Cougars to rely on their passing attack. With STM throwing it more, the Rebels capitalized by snagging three interceptions from Kaden Chavis, Jacob Dean and Jaxon Broussard.

The Cougars will look to bounce back from this loss as they are ready to look ahead to Week 10.

“We made a few turnovers and they performed so hats off to the Rebels,” STM football coach Jim Hightower said. “We’ll go to work tomorrow morning and work to get better.”
