Aaron Murray predicts CFP bracket, national championship winner

Former Georgia Bulldog and college football analyst Aaron Murray released his prediction on the College Football Playoff. He went on his social media account to release the prediction, and he went with his former team, picking the Georgia Bulldogs to win the national championship.

He pointed out all the winners of each playoff game, so Georgia would defeat the No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels, the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes, and the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers to win the national championship. Another wrinkle in his Georgia pride is he predicts former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck to go far in the playoff, with his Miami Hurricanes beating No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 2 Ohio State on their way to the semifinals. Beck would face his former team in that game if Murray’s prediction comes true.

Murray might be showing some bias to his former team, but the Bulldogs should be considered a championship-caliber team. ESPN’s Football Power Index structure has the Bulldogs in the second-tier of championship contending teams, behind Indiana and Ohio State.

However, Georgia has one of the strongest resumes in the playoff, placing second behind just Indiana in strength of record, a stat that quantifies how good a team is based on if an average Top 25 team would have that team’s record or better, given that team’s schedule.

Bias aside, Aaron Murray’s prediction illustrates how easy of a path Georgia has to the national championship. In the Sugar Bowl, the Bulldogs get to play either Ole Miss, a team that they’ve already beaten, or Tulane, a Group of Five opponent. In the semifinal, they play either Ohio State, who has an 0-2 record vs. Georgia, Texas A&M, who beat just one opponent currently in the top 25 (Notre Dame), or Miami, who has their former quarterback.
