ACC Power Rankings: After Week 6

I have no idea what to make of the ACC anymore. I feel like I have a good grasp at the top of the conference and the bottom of it, but in the middle it seems like anyone could beat anyone. Even in the era in which the ACC has gotten rid of divisions, the spirit of the ACC Coastal still lives on.

With another week in the books, let’s try and power rank the conference following Week 6.

1. Miami (5-0, 3-0 ACC)

Last Week: Bye

The Hurricanes are the aforementioned team at the top of the conference that I have a good grasp on, even after a week in which they didn’t play.

This Week: Saturday vs. Florida State

2. Wake Forest (5-1, 3-1 ACC)

Last Week: Beat NC State 38-14

Wake have still won every game bar a respectable loss to Miami. I think we can officially call the Deacs “pretty good.”

This Week: Saturday at Cal

3. SMU (4-1, 2-1 ACC)

Last Week: Bye

SMU was not part of any of the chaos, getting the week off.

This Week: Saturday vs. Virginia

4. Duke (4-1, 1-1 ACC)

Last Week: Lost to Georgia Tech 28-25

Here are the epitome of my “I know nothing about the conference” statement. Losing to Georgia Tech? What?

This Week: Saturday vs. North Carolina

5. Clemson (3-2, 2-1 ACC)

Last Week: Bye

Who knows how much it would change fan’s opinions, but Clemson has a route to a respectable season starting this week, if they can take it.

This Week: Saturday vs. Charleston Southern

6. Louisville (3-3, 2-2 ACC)

Last Week: Beat Florida State 44-20

It was a nice comeback for Louisville, not only from falling behind to FSU early, but also from losing to NC State last week.

This Week: Saturday at Syracuse

7. Pitt (5-1, 2-1 ACC)

Last Week: Lost to North Carolina 21-17

Pitt’s starting quarterback Mason Heintschel is out for the season, and based on the way UNC handled that, I have concerns for the rest of the season for the Panthers.

This Week: Saturday at Boston College

8. Virginia Tech (4-2, 1-2 ACC)

Last Week: Lost to Cal 25-20

I’ll give the Hokies a slight pass to due having to go out west to face Cal, but their schedule is about to get semi-tough in coming weeks.

This Week: Saturday vs. Georgia Tech

9. North Carolina (3-2, 1-1 ACC)

Last Week: Beat Pitt 21-17

I have absolutely no idea where to put the Tar Heels.

This Week: Saturday vs. Duke

10. NC State (3-3, 1-2 ACC)

Last Week: Lost to Wake Forest 38-14

That win over Louisville was nice, but the rest of State’s résumé is bizarre.

This Week: Bye

11. Cal (3-3, 2-1 ACC)

Last Week: Beat Virginia Tech 25-20

Cal are very much in the range of me just throwing darts at the the board trying to figure out who to rank where.

This Week: Saturday vs. Wake Forest

12. Virginia (4-2, 2-1 ACC)

Last Week: Beat Syracuse 28-25

On one hand, UVA beat Syracuse. On the other, they had to come from down ten to do it, which isn’t great.

This Week: Saturday at SMU

13. Florida State (3-3, 1-2 ACC)

Last Week: Lost to Louisville 44-20

I got home from work on Friday and turned the game on, and was quite surprised to see FSU up 14-0. Like 10 minutes later, that lead was gone.

This Week: Saturday at Miami

14. Georgia Tech (2-3, 1-1 ACC)

Last Week: Beat Duke 28-25

The Yellow Jackets are the poster child for why it’s hard to use the transitive property in rankings. They just beat Duke, but I can’t rank them all that close to the Blue Devils considering the rest of their season.

This Week: Saturday at Virginia Tech

15. Boston College (2-3, 0-2 ACC)

Last Week: Bye

BC had a bye ahead of a stretch where they’ll play a couple interesting teams.

This Week: Saturday vs. Pitt

16. Syracuse (2-3, 0-3 ACC)

Last Week: Lost to Virginia 28-25

Syracuse somehow have a +44 point differential entirely because they have one blowout over an FCS team. Every other game they’ve played, win or lose, has been close.

This Week: Saturday vs. Louisville

17. Stanford (2-4, 1-3 ACC)

Last Week: Lost to Notre Dame 58-7

I was expecting Notre Dame to do something like that to UNC, so we can safely say the Heels are way better than Stanford.

This Week: Saturday vs. Elon
