“What’s interesting is the other side of it. We can all wrap our arms around Lane Kiffin and say he’s lovable, and he’s a great coach, but in the end, he’s a child. He’s a 51-year-old man behaving like a 16-year-old. And the worst part—there are no adults in the room.”
Although a Louisiana judge temporarily allowed LSU to add Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to its roster, LSU decided not to include them for its season opener against Clemson—for now.
The decision avoided an immediate confrontation with the conference, but it did not end questions surrounding Kiffin’s approach or LSU’s willingness to challenge the rules governing eligibility across college football.
Finebaum also added:
“I thought all college campuses have an athletic director. The one at LSU has been nowhere to be found. The president, Wade Rousse, has been nowhere to be found.”
“But what happened down there has left a stain on this league. And I know it’s not going to happen, and it probably shouldn’t happen, but if the presidents of the SEC took a vote today, they very well might vote to kick LSU out of the league. And I can tell you fans out there would not be the least bit upset by it.”

The situation has placed additional pressure on Kiffin ahead of his first game as LSU’s head coach. While Wright and Harris will not play against Clemson, they remain enrolled at the university and could potentially be added to the roster later in the season. LSU currently has 103 players listed, leaving two available spots under the 105-player limit. However, the legal dispute involving LSU, the SEC and the NCAA remains unresolved.
For now, Kiffin must turn his attention toward Clemson and show that the controversy surrounding the program will not distract the Tigers from producing results on the field. The season opener will provide an early indication of whether LSU can manage the off-field attention while meeting the high expectations surrounding Kiffin’s arrival.
A victory would shift the conversation back toward football, while a disappointing performance could bring even more criticism of the head coach and the university’s leadership.
