The Sun Bowl it is.

The bowl games were announced on Dec. 7 after the dust had settled from all the conference championship games, and coach Kenny Dillingham's team is headed to El Paso to face Duke (8-5) on Dec. 31 in the annual game to be televised by CBS.

The announcements of the bowls not related to the CFP picture were a bit delayed after Notre Dame opted out of a bowl, as it did not make the 12-team playoff field. Iowa State and Kansas State both also opted out of bowls, citing coaching changes and injuries.

It is the second bowl berth in Dillingham's three seasons. Of course, last season the Sun Devils were part of the College Football Playoff and went to the Peach Bowl, where they lost a double-overtime heartbreaker to Texas 39-31.

Arizona State has participated in the Sun Bowl seven times, more than any other bowl game. Of course, much of the reason for that is that Pac-12 teams had a tie-in with that particular bowl. ASU is 4-2-1 in the Sun Bowl, the last appearance coming in 2019 when the Sun Devils defeated Florida State 20-14 in the Herm Edwards era.

Todd Graham had two ASU entries in the Sun Bowl, with a 52-31 loss to North Carolina State in 2017 and a 36-31 win over Duke in 2014.

ASU is 15-18-1 all-time in bowl games.

Duke upset Virginia, 27-20 in overtime, to win the ACC championship.

This will be the second meeting of the teams. The first came in the 2014 Sun Bowl, which ASU won 36-31.
