New Mexico State had one of Conference USA’s best tight ends in 2025. Now, he’ll be playing somewhere else.
Gavin Harris officially announced his transfer to Georgia Tech on Thursday, Jan. 15, the same day he reportedly visited the ACC program. Harris also considered NC State and South Carolina but chose the Yellow Jackets.
Harris was the Aggies’ first transfer acquisition ahead of the 2025 season, with his signing announced as part of their 2024 early signing class. He arrived from Central Michigan, previously played at Howard, and spent one season with NM State, meaning GT will be his fourth team in as many seasons.
Harris led all Conference USA tight ends in 2025 with 531 receiving yards, a mark that also ranked third among all Aggies and eighth among all FBS tight ends. He caught one touchdown for NM State, which was a game-winning 15-yard snag against Tulsa on Sept. 6.
Harris earned first-team All-CUSA honors after the season, joining defensive lineman Ezra Christensen on the first team and becoming one of four Aggies to be an all-conference player in 2025 alongside Christensen, wide receiver Donovan Faupel, and safety Naeten Mitchell. He also earned third-team Group of Five All-American honors from HERO Sports.
Harris is the latest Aggies starter to depart in the transfer portal. Faupel has left for Arkansas, interior offensive lineman BJ Tolo transferred to UNLV, and Christensen, Mitchell, and linebacker Tyler Martinez have all joined Colorado. Defensive lineman Ta’Avili Tuitama and long snapper Grayson Curtis have also left for Utah State and Arizona State, respectively.
