'Ahead of Schedule!' Will Hammond Holds the Keys to Texas Tech’s 2026 Title Dreams

Now Will Hammond has to prove he’s the quarterback capable of finishing the job.

The Red Raiders enter 2026 with massive expectations, but their most important position has taken a dramatic turn.
Brendan Sorsby was expected to lead the offense before his eligibility situation ended that plan, thrusting Hammond into the spotlight after he spent the offseason recovering from a torn ACL.
That makes Hammond one of the biggest wild cards in college football.
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde ranked Hammond as the fifth-most intriguing quarterback in the country, and it’s easy to understand why.
Texas Tech has assembled one of its most talented rosters in years, but virtually every championship possibility now runs through a quarterback with only three career starts.
Hammond is 1-2 as a starter, including a loss to Arkansas in the 2024 Liberty Bowl.
He served as a capable backup to Behren Morton during Texas Tech’s Big 12 championship season, but being the full-time guy brings an entirely different level of pressure.
Especially with last season still hanging over the program.
Texas Tech reached its first College Football Playoff but saw quarterback problems contribute to an offense that was shut out.
The Red Raiders can’t afford another postseason collapse if they want to move from conference contender to legitimate national threat.
The encouraging news is Hammond’s knee.
Head coach Joey McGuire has praised the quarterback’s approach to rehabilitation for months.
“If you could say somebody is ahead of schedule, Will Hammond is ahead of schedule,” McGuire told ESPN in May.
McGuire also called Hammond “a different human,” praising his maturity and commitment to rehab.
That work has paid off.
Hammond has since been medically cleared and is expected to be available by Texas Tech’s Sept. 18 conference matchup against Houston.
There’s also optimism he could return even earlier if his recovery continues progressing without setbacks.
Texas Tech has enough roster depth to survive the opening weeks without Hammond if necessary.
But surviving isn’t the goal anymore.
The Red Raiders have spent aggressively, recruited aggressively and built expectations accordingly. They’re not trying to sneak into the Big 12 race.
They’re trying to own it.

That puts Hammond in one of the most fascinating situations in college football. He didn’t enter the offseason expecting the entire operation to become his.
Now Texas Tech’s championship ceiling may depend on how quickly he’s ready to take control.
