Airline's Darby decommits from LSU but Haynesville's Washington stays

On the eve of the national signing day, LSU and new coach Lane Kiffin have apparently lost one of the top recruits in Northwest Louisiana.

Airline’s Kenny Darby, a four-star recruit with game-changing speed, has canceled his signing day event, which was slated for 1 p.m. Wednesday in the school’s auditorium, according to coach Justin Scogin.

“Long story short, it’s the staff,” Scogin said while declining to elaborate on Darby’s decision.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Darby committed to former LSU coach Brian Kelly more than a year ago and has remained true to the commitment since. Darby hasn’t declared where he will sign nor when the new signing date will be. He has multiple SEC offers including Ole Miss, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Missouri and Alabama, along with Miami and Houston.

The multi-dimensional talent caught 83 passes for 1,124 yards and eight TDs last season while rushing for 547 more yards and nine additional scores.

LSU’s other Northwest Louisiana commitment, Haynesville quarterback Isaiah Washington, who will be a defensive back at LSU, remains in the LSU fold he said Tuesday afternoon. Washington will officially sign Wednesday then hold a signing event Thursday morning at 8 a.m. at the school.

“I think it’s great, and the fact that it’s not really changing the defense makes it a plus,” Washington told the USA Today Network about Kiffin taking over. “I’m still planning on signing so I can shut this all down and start focusing on the place I’m going to be starting a new chapter at.”

No. 1 Haynesville (12-0) is undefeated and will play in the LHSAA Non-Select Division IV semifinals Friday night against No. 4 Jeanerette (11-1) in Red Franklin Stadium.
