The University of Akron football team opens the home portion of its 2026 schedule on Saturday, Sept. 12, with a game against Robert Morris University at InfoCision Stadium.

Akron lost its season-opening game 38-16 to Wake Forest on Sept. 3 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Akron is a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) program and Robert Morris is a NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program. Robert Morris is 2-0 with a 28-7 win over Northeast Conference foe Wagner and a 29-9 nonleague win over West Virginia State.

Akron set to meet Robert Morris for first time in football

Saturday will be the first meeting between Akron and Robert Morris in football. The Colonials are seeking their first victory over an FBS opponent.

What to know about the Akron football team. Who's starting at QB for the Zips today?

Akron started freshman Cibastian Broughton at quarterback against Wake Forest after eligibility issues for North Texas transfer Reese Poffenbarger put his status in limbo. Broughton was 21-for-26 passing for 111 yards along with a team-best 82 yards on 14 rushes. Reserve QB Brayden Roggow completed all seven passes for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

Broughton is set to start Saturday. Poffenbarger is unavailable because of NCAA eligibility issues.

The Zips were limited to 305 yards of total offense against the Demon Deacons, with more than half of those coming on two fourth-quarter touchdown drives. Trailing 38-3, their first TD came on Roggow's 2-yard pass to Elijah Alexander with 7:06 remaining, and the second TD came on Roggow's 4-yard toss to Titus Myers with 29 seconds left.

Akron's Matthew Schramm made a 28-yard field goal after Wake Forest built a 28-0 lead. Marcel Williams paced the Zips' receiving corps with four catches for 38 yards and Luke Sivon added five receptions for 30 yards.

QB Gio Lopez gave Akron fits by throwing for three touchdowns and 350 yards in his Wake Forest debut after playing for North Carolina last year. Lopez completed 21 of 32 passes. Lopez threw a 27-yard TD pass Kam Shanks, connected with Antonio Meeks on a 72-yard TD pass and connected with Carlos Hernandez on a 78-yard TD pass.

Hernandez had five catches for 165 yards, Ty Clark III ran for 105 yards on seven carries and Deuce Lawrence added a 4-yard fourth-quarter touchdown. Connor Calvert made three of four field-goal attempts for the Demon Deacons.

Donelius Johnson led Akron with 11 tackles, including nine assisted stops. Rodrick Hunter and Daunte Curtis each finished with five tackles.

What to know about the Robert Morris Colonials football team

Robert Morris opened its 2026 home schedule by defeating West Virginia State on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Colonials improved to 2-0 on the season, marking the first time RMU has opened a campaign 2-0 since 2004.

RMU finished the night with 20 first downs and 427 total yards.

Colonials quarterback Carson Haggard completed 13-of-25 pass attempts for 224 yards and three touchdowns, and added 20 rushing yards and a touchdown on three carries.

Galen Combs had two catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Noah Schaerli added four receptions for 58 yards and Jaqai Carter recorded 52 receiving yards and a touchdown. Keino Fitzpatrick II led RMU on the ground with 76 yards.

Through two games, Combs has 188 receiving yards, four receiving touchdowns and five total touchdowns.

Robert Morris has five players who played at a high school in Greater Akron: cornerback Antonio Martin (Green), defensive lineman Asher Wilson (Nordonia), safety Blake Allen (Nordonia), offensive lineman Pete Jarvis (Medina) and wide receiver Aiden Henry (Walsh Jesuit).

The Colonials also have one player — safety Noel Roach — who previously played for the Zips.
