Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit and the Amazon Prime Video broadcast team had a warm-up on Thursday night ahead of the coming NFL season, carrying the preseason game between the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns.
With Cleveland hosting the game, exterior shots of the city that the broadcast used to come in and out of commercials featured shots of Lake Erie.
Michaels decided to use the opportunity to make a joke about the current, let’s say “politically amorphous” state of the names of the Great Lakes.
“That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie. We’re not quite sure at this point,” Michaels said. “But we’ll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it’s going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo (for Week 1).”
“Anyway, you know what I’m talking about,” Michaels said with a laugh. “Some of you do. Read the news.”

Michaels was commenting on the recent executive order signed by the President of the United States that hopes to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, because the United States is currently in a trade war with its neighbor to the north, and renaming things is a thing that the current president really likes to do.
Fans online seemed to enjoy the joke.

Michaels has never been afraid to crack a joke in the booth, even if the listening audience might not always be in on it. Usually, those jokes have to do with the point spread or point total of the game he is on the call for, but it would appear that at 81 years old, Michaels is still down to try out new material.
