One of Alabama football‘s 2026 opponents has made a decision on the immediate future of their head coach.

The Florida State Seminoles, who are scheduled to travel to Bryant-Denny Stadium on Sept. 19 in the 2026 college football season, announced Sunday that coach Mike Norvell would return for a seventh season in Tallahassee.

Norvell’s team slipped to 5-6 following a sloppy 21-11 loss at NC State on Friday, boxing the Seminoles into a must-win game against the rival Florida Gators in Gainesville in order to secure bowl eligibility. FSU committed four turnovers in the loss to the Wolfpack.

Florida State wrapped up ACC play at 2-6, a slight improvement from its 1-7 mark a season ago. The Seminoles’ 31-17 upset win over Alabama in Week 1 at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee has become a stain on the Crimson Tide’s College Football Playoff résumé.

Norvell is 7-16 since guiding the Seminoles to a 12-0 regular season and the ACC championship in 2023. Florida State was left out of the four-team College Football Playoff that year in favor of one-loss Alabama and Nick Saban, who upset the unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs, 27-24, in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.

Norvell is 38-33 in six seasons at Florida State and has had just two winning seasons. He was reportedly a strong contender for the Alabama job that ultimately went to Kalen DeBoer after Saban announced his retirement in January 2024.
