Alabama football’s LT Overton didn’t much enjoy watching the Crimson Tide’s postseason from the sideline, but nobody wanted UA to win more than the senior defensive end, because he couldn’t have his season to end that way.
Overton last played in the Iron Bowl, a 27-20 road win at Auburn, but an undisclosed medical issue forced him off the field for Alabama‘s 28-7 SEC Championship Game loss to Georgia, and its 34-24 win at Oklahoma in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Overton added little detail as to what the issue was.
“It was mostly an internal health problem,” Overton said. “It was heartbreaking. But I’m back on the field now, so I can’t complain.”
Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said Overton stayed in good physical condition through his absence, which allowed him to return to practice as ready to play as possible.
“Everybody says “Built by Bama,” but it’s really Built by Ballou in this program,” Overton said, referring to Alabama strength coach David Ballou. “He made sure I was getting in-game attention as far as staying in shape. Not just speed mechanics but also conditioning. It’s a different type of conditioning trying to move 300-pounders, and he’s gotten me back to a point where I’m feeling good again.”
Overton is among Alabama’s most effective pass rushers, with 33 tackles and four sacks on the season. If he’s as close to game shape as he suggests, Overton’s return to the lineup should make an immediate impact for the Crimson Tide defense. UA faces Indiana on Thursday (3 p.m. CT, ESPN) in the CFP Rose Bowl quarterfinal.
