Alabama added another impressive piece to its future on Friday, landing a commitment from four-star defensive back Braylen Gibbs, who announced he was flipping from Vanderbilt to the Crimson Tide.

Gibbs, a standout prospect from Knoxville Catholic in Tennessee, had been committed to Vanderbilt since December of last year. However, after several trips to Tuscaloosa and continued communication with Alabama's coaching staff, the talented defensive back decided that his future belongs with Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide.
The flip continues what has been a productive stretch on the recruiting trail for Alabama as the staff works to build strong foundations in both the 2027 and 2028 recruiting classes.
For Gibbs, the decision did not happen overnight. Alabama offered him in March, and from that point forward, the relationship between the Tennessee native and the Crimson Tide only grew stronger. He attended Alabama's A-Day event in April and made another unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa this past weekend. Those visits appear to have played a major role in helping Alabama secure the commitment.
At 6-foot-2 and around 175 pounds, Gibbs already possesses the size that college coaches covet in defensive backs. His length and athleticism have made him one of the more intriguing defensive prospects in the 2028 recruiting cycle.
Recruiting services view him as one of the top players in Tennessee regardless of position. He is ranked among the nation's top cornerbacks and has attracted scholarship offers from some of college football's biggest programs. Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Miami, Kentucky and Missouri were all among the schools pursuing him before he ultimately chose Alabama.
Gibbs becomes the third commitment in Alabama's 2028 recruiting class and the first defensive back to join the group. He also becomes the second defensive commitment overall, joining linebacker Dustin Henry as defensive building blocks for the future.

The class already includes quarterback Charles Scott Jr., giving Alabama key pieces on both sides of the football this early in the cycle.
While recruiting rankings can and will change over the next couple of years, Alabama's staff has shown a willingness to identify talent early and build relationships before prospects become household names nationally. Landing a player like Gibbs is another example of that approach paying off.
One of the biggest takeaways from this recruitment is Alabama's ability to go into another SEC footprint and pull a highly regarded prospect away from a conference rival. Vanderbilt secured Gibbs' commitment months ago, but the Crimson Tide never stopped recruiting him, and that persistence ultimately paid dividends.
For DeBoer and his staff, the addition of Gibbs represents more than just another commitment. It is another sign that Alabama continues to have strong momentum on the recruiting trail as the program builds toward the future.
The 2028 class is still in its early stages, but Alabama has already landed a quarterback, a linebacker and now a talented defensive back. With plenty of recruiting battles still ahead, the Crimson Tide appears to be off to another strong start.
