Bud Moore, who played for legendary coach Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama before embarking on a long career as a college coach himself, died Monday. He was 86.

In 1975, Moore led the University of Kansas to its second consecutive winning season, becoming the first Jayhawks football coach to do so in 13 years. In November of that year, Moore coached Kansas to a 23-3 upset of Oklahoma, ending the Sooners’ 37-game unbeaten streak.
“It’s got to be the greatest victory in football,” he said after the game.
Moore was named Big Eight Coach of the Year after the 1975 season, and was the runner-up to Ohio State’s Woody Hayes in the Football Writers Association of America National Coach of the Year voting.
Kansas went 1-10 in 1978. Moore was fired after the season. He then purchased a Miller beer distributorship in Pensacola which, according to AL.com, achieved the highest market share of any Miller distributor in the state of Florida for seven straight years.
“He valued loyalty and integrity from all, and reciprocated in turn,” Paul W. Bryant Museum historian Kirk McNair wrote, via AL.com. “He had a sharp intellect and an ability to motivate. He could be hard-nosed and gentle in the same instant. He loved dogs and horses and he dearly loved his family. He believed in people and did his best to surround himself with great ones. He made the people around him better.”
