Alabama in Prime Position to Flip SEC-Rival Commit

Perhaps there’s some light to be shed in Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s 2027 recruiting class.

One of the many losses that Alabama suffered for its 2027 class was three-star wide receiver Cedrick Simmons, out of Selma, who committed to rival Auburn in late June.

However, there seems to be reason to believe that Simmons has his eyes on Tuscaloosa, according to Rivals’ VP of National Recruiting, Steve Wiltfong.

Growing up, Simmons was a Crimson Tide fan and came from an Alabama family.

Which helps explain why Simmons admitted he was torn after committing to Auburn last month.

“It was a tough decision,” Simmons told Rivals after committing. “I had to choose between my dream team or the rivalry that I always grew up going against. My whole family has always been Alabama fans, and they all wanted me to go to Alabama.”

But then one visit to Auburn changed everything.

“This spring was when Auburn really made their move,” Simmons said. “Coach [Kodi] Burns went into specific detail about how much they wanted me, how much they liked me and what they could use me for. That put Auburn up there for me, then when I talked with Coach [Alex] Golesh, he broke down all the facts on why Auburn would be the best fit for me. They showed how much they love me, and we’ve built that relationship for so long. That was big.”

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer never gave up though – and for good reason.

Simmons brings a dynamic skillset to the table, and one that will be crucial to how Alabama runs its offense in the future.

Standing at 5-foot-8, he may not be the biggest guy, but he’s stocky at 190 pounds. And in order to be a reliable slot receiver, you need to have exceptional hands. Simmons is the gold standard.

His route running is top-tier, and has enough wiggle to his game to fluster defenders. Not to mention, last season he averaged 20.6 yards per catch and amassed 20 touchdowns.

You may look at the rankings, and be underwhelmed to see where Simmons has ranked.

However, Alabama has been among the best at targeting top, unrecognized talent on the recruiting trail.

And given its persistence, the Crimson Tide staff believe that Simmons is the rule, not the exception.
