Chasing perfection in college football can be a dangerous trap, and Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer knows it better than anyone. Fresh off a 49-18 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks at Bryant-Denny Stadium, DeBoer made it clear that searching for an entirely flawless stat sheet isn’t what defines a championship contender.
Speaking with play-by-play broadcaster Chris Stewart on the Crimson Tide Sports Network, DeBoer broke down why expecting flawless execution across every single snap is unrealistic in modern college football.
“I think it’s hard to have a perfect game” on offense, defense, and special teams, DeBoer told Stewart. He added that while good football teams “find a way to compliment each other,” truly elite squads go a step further. “Great teams cover for each other.”

That exact mindset showed up on the field during their dominant win over South Carolina. Freshman quarterback Keelon Russell put on a show, lighting up the defense for 365 passing yards and four touchdown passes while adding another score on the ground. Wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams served as his go-to target, catching five passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
On the defensive side, Alabama kept pushing back against the Gamecocks. Linebacker Luke Metz led the charge with a massive performance, recording 13 total tackles and a fumble recovery. Safety Red Morgan helped lock things down in the secondary with an interception as the Crimson Tide forced two turnovers and racked up 489 total yards.
For DeBoer, that mutual support is what matters most as Southeastern Conference play heats up. Chasing perfection sounds great, but college football rarely goes according to script. Alabama does not need every play to go according to plan to win big games. They just need each unit picking up the slack when another stumbles. That complementary grit makes the Crimson Tide dangerous going forward.
