One of the biggest questions of the offseason for Alabama State football was answered on Dec. 16 after quarterback Andrew Body announced on social media he plans to enter the transfer portal in January.
“I am deeply grateful to coach Eddie Robinson Jr. for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to attend his alma matter — an experience that shaped me both on and off the field and helped prepare me for life beyond the game,” Body wrote in a statement on social media. “With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal to pursue what God has prepared for — the next chapter of my career.”
Body, a Corpus Christi, Texas native, was a catalyst for the Hornets’ best season since 2004 that saw Alabama State place first or second in every offensive category in the SWAC, and place in the top 12 in seven categories in the FCS.
For his efforts, Body received numerous offseason accolades. Body was named the SWAC offensive player of the year while grabbing a spot on the SWAC first-team offense. Body also earned All-American honors and the HBCU National Player of the Year.
A shoulder injury in Week 10 cut Body’s season with the Hornets short but he still managed to throw for 1,770 yards, 20 touchdowns and only one interception on 160 passing attempts. Body also rushed for 518 yards and four touchdowns in 2025.
The announcement will be a big blow for Alabama State football faithful, but Te’Sean Smoot did a commendable job filling in for Body in his absence, going undefeated. The Hornets also signed in-state recruit Aaron Frye from Clay-Chalkville. Frye led the Cougars to an AHSAA Class 6A state championship after which he was named the game’s MVP. Frye also earned the MVP award in the AHSAA North-South All Star game on Dec. 12.
