The game of the week in college football finds a pair of top-six ranked SEC powerhouses facing off with the potential No. 1 ranking on the line as Georgia and Alabama renew their rivalry on Saturday night.
Georgia is in position to strike from the No. 2 position in the AP poll with a win. No. 6 Alabama will make a bid to jump to the top of the rankings if they can win at home if they can take down the reigning SEC champions. Here are five aspects to the game that could determine who leaves Tuscaloosa the winner.
1. Gunner Stockton vs. Alabama’s Pressure
Stockton has quietly been one of the country’s most efficient passers. The Georgia quarterback ranks third nationally in passing efficiency, exemplifying not only his own accuracy but the quality of the Bulldogs’ highly experienced group of blockers.
Alabama’s expert pass rush will challenge this group when Georgia is forced into obvious passing situations. Bama is top 40 in FBS, racking up 6 negative plays per game, but the Tide’s aerial defense is porous. That unit is just 105th in the country, allowing 234 yards on average.
2. Keelon Russell Is the Biggest Threat
Alabama’s sophomore quarterback has gone from promising to genuinely dangerous. Over his last three games, Russell has produced 13 touchdowns without a turnover, helping the Tide score a record 56 against Mississippi State last week.
But there’s one critical caveat: the competition. Those three games came against Florida State, South Carolina, and Mississippi State. Georgia’s defense represents a completely different level of challenge.
That unit is allowing just 13.4 points per game, fewest of any team in the SEC, and ranks 12th nationally. If Russell gets comfortable early, Alabama becomes extremely difficult to contain. If Georgia forces him into third-and-longs, the equation could change dramatically.
3. Georgia’s Running Back Situation Matters
Georgia will go without lead rusher Chauncey Bowens, who won’t play with an undisclosed injury. With him goes six touchdown carries on his 35 attempts this year, a critical piece of UGA’s 27th ranked rushing offense.
The good news: Nate Frazier is back after his rib ailment and is off the injury report. Frazier has 211 yards and five touchdowns on only 26 carries. Dwight Phillips Jr. and Bo Walker also provide legitimate depth.
Georgia’s run game could be particularly important because it keeps Alabama from pinning its ears back against Stockton.
4. Bama’s Receivers Are a Big Advantage
This could be where Alabama has its best matchup edge.
Georgia lost six of its top seven pass catchers from last season, and injuries have made the current receiving group even thinner.
Alabama has multiple receiving threats capable of creating explosive plays against a Bulldogs secondary that hasn’t faced anything like this caliber of competition.
5. Don’t Forget the Weather
Hurricane Isaias could become a genuine variable that completely rewrites the offensive calculus for both sides. Forecasts are calling for potentially heavy rain and difficult conditions around Tuscaloosa, with officials monitoring how the storm develops.
With bad weather comes a premium on running the football with authority, winning at field position, coming out ahead in the turnover battle, and special teams.
And that’s potentially good news for Georgia. The Bulldogs have an established offensive line, multiple capable backs, and an elite defense in the trenches. A messy game could reduce Alabama’s perceived explosive-play advantage.
Georgia vs. Alabama prediction: Who wins?
DraftKings Line: Alabama -1.5 | Total: 51.5
Alabama is 2-0 in its last two regular season games against Georgia, who avenged those losses with a 28-7 victory in the SEC Championship Game. These are two evenly matched teams with dynamic quarterbacks and expert pass rushes.
The weather makes the under particularly interesting. A lot of rain could change everything. If conditions seriously deteriorate, Georgia’s physicality becomes an even bigger advantage. If the game stays clean and drier than expected, Alabama’s chances improve considerably.
The Big Lead picks…
- Georgia wins 24-20
- In an upset
- And hits the under
Pick: Georgia to win outright. The Bulldogs’ defense makes just enough plays late, while Stockton exploits the Tide’s passing defense and avoids the turnover that could swing this game.
