The first-ever meeting between Indiana and Alabama took place in the Rose Bowl Game with the highest of stakes. And while the Crimson Tide may have left their offense at home in a 38-3 season-ending loss, the fans showed up in droves to watch it happen.
According to Front Office Sports, the Alabama-Indiana game made history as the highest-rated game of the 12-team College Football Playoff era. A whopping 22.5 million viewers tuned in to see Fernando Mendoza carve apart the Crimson Tide defense as Indiana's own defense limited the Tide to one of their worst showings in a bowl game ever.
"Indiana’s Rose Bowl win over Alabama drew 22.5 million viewers. It's the most-watched game of the 12-team College Football Playoff era," FOS shared on X.
Granted, this is only the second year of the 12-team format and doesn't even come close to cracking the top-10 most-viewed games of all-time.
The overall record belongs to the legendary 2006 Rose Bowl BCS National Championship Game between USC and Texas. 35.6 million fans tuned in for that one.
The highest-rated game since the College Football Playoff began was the 2015 CFP National Championship Game between Ohio State and Oregon. 34.1 million fans watched the Buckeyes win the first national title of the playoff era.
A dynasty falls, a new power rises
The box score of the Rose Bowl didn't just end Alabama's pursuit of another national title. In many ways it marked the definitive end of their two-decade run as the most dominant program in college football. In the hours after the game, fans and analysts from across the country admonished the team for looking nothing like the teams that Nick Saban won six national titles with between 2009 and 2020.
On the other side of the field, Indiana firmly cemented themselves as one of college football's ascending powers. The program that was until this year had the most losses in college football history are now 25-2 over the past two seasons with a two-time Coach of the Year, a dominating defense, a committed staff and – most importantly for this season – their first-ever Heisman Trophy winner under center.
The sport can change in a hurry and who can say whether Alabama returns to the top of the mountain or Indiana returns to the scrap heap in 2026?
But there was just something about the Rose Bowl Game that felt like a true changing of the guard moment in the entire sport.
