Alabama vs. Oklahoma Prediction: College Football Playoff Round 1 Preview

Alabama and Oklahoma will meet for the third time in a span of 13 months in an all-SEC College Football Playoff clash on Friday night.
The Sooners eliminated the Crimson Tide from CFP contention last November in Norman with a 24-3 upset, and they nearly did so again when they won 23-21 at Bryant-Denny Stadium a month ago. ’Bama weathered that loss — and a blowout to Georgia in the SEC championship — to return to the playoff after a one-year absence. Oklahoma’s triumph in Tuscaloosa was the signature win on a résumé that propelled it back into the playoff for the first time since 2020.
After a hot start to SEC play, the No. 9 Crimson Tide (10-3) have slowed down considerably over the past several weeks with two losses, a close call against Auburn and a win over FCS Eastern Illinois. Alabama has also struggled on the road with a 4-2 record in away or neutral-site games and no wins by more than one score.
The No. 8 Sooners (10-2) aren’t rolling into the playoff red hot, either, though they are on a four-game winning streak — all against teams that made bowl games. Having nearly three weeks off since its last game on Nov. 29 — an extra week of rest that the Tide missed as they played in the SEC title game — also benefits OU.
- College Football Playoff: First-Round Matchups, Predictions, Storylines to Watch
Sooners quarterback John Mateer has been banged up for much of the season and had time to heal up ahead of the CFP. OU’s defense will also get reinforcements in the form of star defensive lineman R Mason Thomas, who missed the first game against Alabama. But as Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson said this week: “At this point in the season, I don’t know a team who is healthy at all.”
There’s been considerable line movement ahead of this game, as Alabama opened as a 1.5-point favorite and is now a 1.5-point underdog to Oklahoma.
Friday’s game marks the second time the Crimson Tide and Sooners face off in the College Football Playoff. Alabama won the first meeting, 45-34, in the 2018 semifinal at the Orange Bowl. Still, Oklahoma is one of just 18 teams with a winning record against the Tide. The Sooners lead the all-time series, 5-2-1.

Why Alabama Will Win
The Crimson Tide almost doubled up Oklahoma in yardage when these teams met a month ago. Simpson threw for over 300 yards against the SEC’s best defense. The issue for Alabama was that it coughed up three turnovers, including an 87-yard pick-six that flipped the game in the first quarter. That the Tide played so sloppily — there was also a blocked field goal to end the first half — and only lost by two points should inspire confidence for the rematch.
The availability of tight end Josh Cuevas looms large. He was Simpson’s top target against the Sooners, but he hasn’t played since then and is listed as questionable. Running back Jam Miller, who missed the SEC Championship Game, is off the injury report, another good sign for coach Kalen DeBoer’s offense. But Alabama’s road to victory is through the air, not on the ground. This is still a team that ran for minus-3 yards last time out against Georgia, and Oklahoma’s run defense is even better than Georgia’s. Wide receivers Germie Bernard and Ryan Williams, who has just three catches in his last three games, will have to be sharp against the Sooners.

Defensively, Alabama doesn’t give up much on the ground and is particularly stout against the pass. Mateer threw for just 138 yards against the Crimson Tide, and OU’s only offensive touchdown came on a quarterback run. If ’Bama limits explosive plays in the passing game and holds the lowest-scoring offense in the CFP field (26.4 ppg) to 20 points or fewer, it has a strong chance to pull off an upset of its own.
Why Oklahoma Will Win
Have you seen the Sooners’ defense? They surrender fewer than 14 points per game and have given up 20-plus just four times all season. Oklahoma is tied for first in sacks, ranks second in defensive success rate and comes in at No. 5 in rushing yards allowed. With Mason Thomas back in action, that vaunted unit will be in even better shape.
The Sooners’ offense still leaves a lot to be desired, evidenced by back-to-back 17-point showings to close out the regular season. But to drive home just how dominant OU’s defense has been, 17 points was still enough to win those games against Missouri and LSU. That might not hold true against ’Bama, which is where Mateer comes in. He’s the Sooners’ X-factor in an anemic run game, and he can come up with explosive plays in the passing attack. Mateer’s connection with Isaiah Sategna III is essential, especially after they only connected for 26 yards against ’Bama. Mateer is coming off his first 300-yard passing game since the opener, but it was also his second outing with three interceptions. That can’t happen if the Sooners are going to win the turnover battle again.

Special teams is an underrated edge for Oklahoma, which saw kicker Tate Sandell and punter Grayson Miller named first-team All-SEC. Sandell, who is 23-for-24 on the year and 7-for-7 from 50-plus yards, ensures his team isn’t coming away scoreless often in plus territory. And Miller can flip the field in what’s projected to be a low-scoring game where field position will be at a premium.
Final Score Prediction: Alabama 23, Oklahoma 20
A quarter of the Crimson Tide’s turnovers occurred in a single game that they still had a chance to win. That’s unlikely to happen again. A bounce back from Simpson and the offense is also in order after the disaster in Atlanta. The same can’t be said for the Sooners on that side of the ball. And for all of Alabama’s issues on the road, this is still a team that went to Georgia and won this season. It won’t be pretty, but the Tide will keep on rolling to the Rose Bowl where top-seeded Indiana awaits.
