Alabama's Kalen DeBoer Put on 'Panic' Alert Due to Poor Recruiting Start

Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer took the program to the SEC Championship Game in his second year and won a College Football Playoff game, but the team is lacking in recruits for the 2027 class.

Following his success in 2025, DeBoer signed a seven-year, $87.5 million contract extension. Alabama believes he can lead the team to the national championship and believes the program is better off with a consistent approach at head coach.

After losing several starting defenders and quarterback Ty Simpson, the Crimson Tide will face an uphill battle to return to the CFP this year. DeBoer is also facing a challenge to recruit not only against top schools in the SEC but in the country as well.

Cody Nagel of CBS Sports argued that there should be some panic at Alabama as the program ranks 62nd nationally in recruiting for the class of 2027.

While slow starts are somewhat normal for the Crimson Tide, the 11 commits they have aren't ranked as high as normal. He thinks the outlook isn't positive for Alabama to have a normal recruiting class by the winter.

"It feels like we do this every summer: point out Alabama's surprisingly low recruiting ranking in June, wonder if the sky is falling, then watch the Crimson Tide finish in the top five anyway," Nagel wrote. "But maybe — maybe — this is the year some mild panic is justified.

"Yes, Alabama still has just 11 commits with the end of June approaching, and low volume has long been part of the Tide's recruiting strategy. The bigger concern is quality. Only one Top247 prospect is currently committed — five-star quarterback Elijah Haven — and Alabama's 88.60 average rating per commit ranks 10th in the SEC."

Recruiting in the South will be a challenge for DeBoer at Alabama, and that fact is well known in the SEC. Still, the program's prestige should help the school add quality players for 2027.

With that being said, Alabama might need to have a better-than-expected season to pull in blue-chip players, or the program will have to hit the transfer portal hard to make up for the deficit.
