Alex Golesh finalizes Auburn football coaching staff | What to know

AUBURN — Alex Golesh‘s first Auburn football coaching staff is complete as the program announced the final hire to the new head coach’s 12-man group of assistants. Larry Scott, formerly the head coach of Howard, was the final piece, coming to the Plains to coach tight ends.

He’s a fitting finale to the hiring process, as Golesh’s staff is largely comprised of two makeups: One, South Florida braintrust. And two, coaches with ample experience. Before Scott was a head coach, he was a Power 4 assistant at Florida, Miami and Tennessee, the last of which he served as offensive coordinator for a season.

Several names, including Joel Gordon and Tyler Hudanick, come with Tampa ties and less name recognition. Then there’s Scott. And former Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks. And former Mississippi State defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler.

The plan looks rather clear: Golesh is entrusting his offense to those who he knows best. The rest? It’s being handled by droves of veterans.

Here’s a full look at Golesh’s staff, including a breakdown of experience and all the changes made.

How experienced is Alex Golesh’s first Auburn football coaching staff?

Not including Golesh, the staff has three former head coaches in Durkin, Porter and Scott. The three are among the 10 assistants who have served as a coordinator collegiately, and seven of those have coordinated for Power 4 programs.

In terms of SEC experience, 10 different staffers have spent at least one season in the league, and their combined experience amounts to more than 50 years.

How much of Hugh Freeze’s staff did Alex Golesh retain?

AUBURN, AL - December 03, 2025 - Auburn Defensive Coordinator DJ Durkin and Auburn Head Football Coach Alex Golesh on National Signing Day at the Woltosz Football Performance Center in Auburn, AL.

Durkin was the notable retention, but in terms of on-field staff, the only other addition by retention was King-Williams, who remained Golesh’s defensive line coach.

Several other Freeze assistants — Chad Lunsford, Derrick Nix, Marcus Davis and TJ Rushing among them — have already taken jobs at other schools.

Who did Alex Golesh hire for off-field staff?

The man to know in Golesh’s front office is Andrew Warsaw, who will serve as Auburn’s general manager and chief of staff. He held the same role at South Florida this year and has worked for the NFL and two other SEC football programs. Warsaw replaces Will Redmond, who held the role the past two seasons.
