The Auburn Tigers exited their Week 1 game against Baylor with several scratches. However, they should be relatively healthy for Saturday's home opener against Southern Miss at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
A pair of offensive linemen, Cole Skinner and Jacob Strand, as well as a pair of pass rushers, Chris Murray and Da'Shawn Womack, exited Auburn's 17-16 win early last Saturday. Alex Golesh provided a positive update on the status of those players during his weekly press conference this week.
“From an injury standpoint, the guys that didn’t finish the game – C.K. Murray will be fine, he’ll be available, ready to rock and roll tomorrow. Da’Shawn Womack is going to be day-to-day, we hope to have him back here by the end of the week and ready to rock and roll," Golesh said Monday. "Cole Skinner was fine if we had to go back on offense, could have gone back out and finished the game. Same thing with Jacob Strand. Outside of that, we left it healthy and encouraged there."
While it is not set in stone that each player will play on Saturday, or for how long, it is encouraging to see all four players listed as starters in Auburn's projected depth chart for Week 2's date with Southern Miss. Strand and Skinner each played 73 snaps in Auburn's win over Baylor last Saturday in Atlanta, and their backups, Jack Leyrer and Kail Ellis, each had chances to prove that they are worthy of sliding in if needed.
On defense, Womack and Murray each logged two tackles and played at least 25 snaps, with Murray leading the way with 41. Malik Autry, Walter Mathis, and Jourdin Crawford all turned in quality snaps on the defensive line this week, with Cody Sigler and Dallas Walker leading the unit in snaps played. At EDGE, Darrion Smith and Nate Johnson both got adequate time on the field in Womack's absence.
Auburn football will host Southern Miss this Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT. The game will air live on SEC Network.
