WASHINGTON — Back on October 13, with two weeks remaining in the high school football regular season, Aliquippa senior quarterback Marques Council was set to be sidelined for the remainder of the year after suffering a knee injury earlier in the season.
But when No. 7 Aliquippa took the field in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals against No. 2 Trinity on Friday, October 31, Council was dressed in pads and on the active roster for the Quips’ playoff matchup.
After both teams traded touchdowns on their opening drives, which was followed by an Aliquippa turnover at midfield, Council checked in at quarterback on the offense’s third drive of the game.
Council settled in with a handoff to start his night and made some short completions, helping make Aliquippa’s offense more dynamic.
Then on the Quips’ final drive of the first half, Council completed a pass to Gavin Wilcox on third and medium to keep the drive moving.
While Aliquippa did not score to end the half, being stopped on the goal line on back-to-back plays as time expired, having Council back under center has provided an additional spark to a team that is going up against one of the top programs in the WPIAL Class 4A this season.
Before his injury, Council was one of the top quarterbacks in the Beaver Valley, throwing for 983 yards, nine touchdowns, completing 53 percent of his passes and throwing just four interceptions.
